knocking on footpegs
« on: August 23, 2010, 12:38:59 AM »

Hello guys,
I've noticed something that feels like knocking on my footpegs when riding slowly.
And it's not always there.

Does someone have an idea what it might be?

Thanks,
Vojdan.

I was thinking about how to give a better explanation while ridding yesterday...
I guess it's got something to do with one of the wheels because the frequency of the "knocks" is like on every rotation of the wheel and as I accelerate the knocking is faster.
And you can't hear it, only feel it.

Check the alignment of the rear wheel. Make sure the chain isn't too tight and lube it while you are down there. ;D

also check for tight spots in the chain.

Ditto the above suggestions.  Also check for a bent rim -- did you hit a curb, pot-hole or big rock recently?  Or drop the front end hard to the road after a monster wheelie?

The weirdest thing happened yesterday...
I was sitting and having a coffee with my friend last night and u guy (a waiter in the coffee-shop) approaches me and says that his friend used to own the bike and that he got hit by a van on the rear side.
He said that the rear wheel was bent or broken  :o and it was fixed, and that the tail was replaced.
This means that Mike might be right on the spot.

I changed my tires recently and the guy who was changing them said the rear wheel is a little bit bent, but nothing serious.

Do you think I should do some major check of something?
I'll check my chain too, like you guys suggest.

whoa, that IS weird. i don't really know what to suggest. there might be something in the service manual about how much runout the wheels can have.

Yesterday I was thinking about where the knocking can come from if the rim is bent or damaged but I couldn't think of a place where the rim would touch anything.

Can it be from somewhere on the wheel axis?
Where should I look?

I'm a bit lost...

if the outside of the wheel is bent, you'll feel it every time that flat spot touches the ground.

Yep, what dj said.  Another possibility is an extremely rare belt separation in the rear tire, or some other tire deformity.  Get the bike up on a rear stand and spin the rear tire, looking for something out-of-round.  You can also see if you have a bent rim this way.  Use a pencil, screwdriver, or some such object held against the fender or swingarm as a reference point.  It will help you see if anything is out of round.
